Composition:

Each capsule contains:

• Cephalexin 500mg

Description:

Cephalexin is a first-generation cephalosporin antibiotic that works by inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis, leading to bacterial cell death. It is effective against many Gram-positive and some Gram-negative bacteria.

Indications:

Cephalexin Capsules are indicated for the treatment of infections caused by susceptible organisms, including:

• Respiratory tract infections (e.g., pharyngitis, tonsillitis, bronchitis)
• Skin and soft tissue infections
• Urinary tract infections (UTIs)
• Bone infections
• Ear infections (otitis media)

Dosage & Administration:

Oral Use Only

Adults and Children ≥15 years:

• Mild to moderate infections: 250-500mg every 6 hours (or 1g every 12 hours)
• Severe infections: Up to 4g per day in divided doses

Pediatrics (1-14 years):

• Usual dose: 25-50mg/kg/day in divided doses every 6-12 hours
• Severe infections: Up to 100mg/kg/day

Renal Impairment:

• Adjust dose based on creatinine clearance (CrCl <30 mL/min)

Contraindications:

• Hypersensitivity to cephalexin or other cephalosporins

Precautions:

• Use with caution in penicillin-allergic patients (cross-reactivity possible)
• Monitor renal function in prolonged therapy
• Prolonged use may cause superinfection (e.g., Clostridium difficile colitis)

Adverse Reactions:

• Common: Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, rash
• Serious: Anaphylaxis, Stevens-Johnson syndrome, pseudomembranous colitis

Drug Interactions:

• May increase anticoagulant effect of warfarin (monitor INR closely)
• Reduced effectiveness of oral contraceptives
• Probenecid may increase cephalexin levels

Overdose & Management:

• Symptoms: Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, seizures (rare)
• Treatment: Supportive care, gastric lavage if necessary
