Rifampicin Capsules 300mg

Product Overview:

Rifampicin is a broad-spectrum antibiotic primarily used to treat tuberculosis (TB), leprosy, and other bacterial infections. It works by inhibiting bacterial RNA synthesis, effectively eliminating Mycobacterium tuberculosis and other pathogens.

Composition:

Each capsule contains:

  • Rifampicin ...... 300mg

Indications:

Tuberculosis (TB): First-line treatment for pulmonary and extrapulmonary TB, usually in combination with other anti-TB drugs.
Leprosy: Part of multi-drug therapy (MDT) for Hansen's disease.
Brucellosis & Legionnaires' Disease: Effective against certain bacterial infections.
Meningococcal Carrier State: Used as prophylaxis to eliminate Neisseria meningitidis.
Other Infections: Effective against Staphylococcus aureus, Mycobacterium avium complex (MAC), and some Gram-positive bacteria.

Dosage & Administration:

For Tuberculosis (in combination therapy):

  • Adults: 10 mg/kg body weight (usually 450mg-600mg once daily)
  • Children: 10-20 mg/kg once daily (max 600mg/day)

For Meningococcal Prophylaxis:

  • Adults: 600mg twice daily for 2 days
  • Children (1-12 years): 10mg/kg twice daily for 2 days
  • Infants (<1 year): 5mg/kg twice daily for 2 days

Take on an empty stomach (1 hour before or 2 hours after meals) for better absorption.

Contraindications:

  • Concomitant use with certain antivirals (e.g., protease inhibitors)

Side Effects:

  • Common: Red-orange discoloration of urine, sweat, and tears (harmless but noticeable), nausea, vomiting, diarrhea
  • Serious (Rare): Hepatotoxicity, hypersensitivity reactions, flu-like syndrome, thrombocytopenia

Precautions:

  • Monitor liver function (ALT/AST) regularly, especially in patients with liver disease.
  • Can reduce the effectiveness of oral contraceptives - consider alternative birth control.
  • May interact with anticoagulants, antiretrovirals, and certain antibiotics - adjust doses if necessary.
  • Avoid alcohol to reduce liver toxicity risk.
