Composition:
Each tablet contains:
- Atorvastatin Calcium equivalent to Atorvastatin 20mg
Description:
Atorvastatin is a statin (HMG-CoA reductase inhibitor) that lowers cholesterol and triglyceride levels in the blood, reducing the risk of cardiovascular diseases such as heart attack and stroke.
Indications:
Atorvastatin Calcium Tablets are indicated for:
- Hypercholesterolemia (High cholesterol, including familial and non-familial)
- Mixed dyslipidemia (High cholesterol and triglycerides)
- Prevention of cardiovascular diseases in high-risk patients
- Reduction of stroke and heart attack risk in diabetic or hypertensive patients
Dosage & Administration:
Adults & Adolescents (≥10 years):
- Usual dose: 10mg to 80mg once daily, based on lipid levels
- Starting dose: 10-20mg once daily
- Maximum dose: 80mg per day
- Administered with or without food
Pediatric Use (10-17 years, familial hypercholesterolemia):
- Starting dose: 10mg once daily
- Maximum dose: 20mg per day
Renal Impairment:
- No dosage adjustment required.
Hepatic Impairment:
- Contraindicated in active liver disease
- Use with caution in patients with a history of liver disease.
Contraindications:
- Hypersensitivity to Atorvastatin or excipients
- Active liver disease or unexplained persistent liver enzyme elevations
- Pregnancy and breastfeeding
- Concomitant use with strong CYP3A4 inhibitors (e.g., clarithromycin, ketoconazole)
Precautions:
- Liver Function: Monitor liver enzymes before and during treatment.
- Muscle Toxicity: Risk of myopathy and rhabdomyolysis; discontinue if muscle pain or weakness occurs.
- Diabetes Risk: May slightly increase blood sugar levels.
- CYP3A4 Interactions: Avoid grapefruit juice and certain medications that increase Atorvastatin levels.
Adverse Reactions:
- Common: Headache, nausea, diarrhea, constipation, muscle pain
- Serious (rare): Rhabdomyolysis, liver dysfunction, hypersensitivity reactions
- Other: Fatigue, dizziness, elevated liver enzymes
Drug Interactions:
- CYP3A4 inhibitors (e.g., ketoconazole, erythromycin): Increased Atorvastatin levels
- Grapefruit juice: May increase the risk of muscle toxicity
- Anticoagulants (e.g., warfarin): May enhance anticoagulant effects
- Fibrates (e.g., gemfibrozil): Increased risk of myopathy
