Metronidazole Injection is a sterile, non-pyrogenic solution designed for intravenous administration. It contains 500mg of Metronidazole in 100ml of solution, providing an effective treatment for anaerobic bacterial and protozoal infections. Metronidazole is a nitroimidazole antibiotic with broad-spectrum activity against anaerobic microorganisms.
Active Ingredient: Metronidazole
Concentration: 500mg/100ml (5mg/ml)
Formulation: Clear, colorless solution
Administration: Intravenous infusion
Packaging: Single-dose bag or bottle, 100ml per unit
Anaerobic Bacterial Infections: Treatment of serious infections caused by susceptible anaerobic bacteria, including:
Intra-abdominal infections (e.g., peritonitis, abscesses).
Gynecological infections (e.g., pelvic inflammatory disease, endometritis).
Skin and soft tissue infections.
Bone and joint infections.
Central nervous system infections (e.g., meningitis, brain abscess).
Protozoal Infections: Treatment of infections caused by protozoa, such as:
Amoebiasis.
Trichomoniasis.
Giardiasis.
Surgical Prophylaxis: Used to prevent postoperative infections in colorectal surgery.
Metronidazole is selectively toxic to anaerobic microorganisms. It penetrates bacterial cells and is reduced by intracellular enzymes, producing reactive intermediates that damage DNA and inhibit nucleic acid synthesis, leading to cell death.
Recommended Dosage:
Adults: 500mg (100ml) every 8 hours or 1g (200ml) every 12 hours, depending on the severity of the infection.
Children: 7.5mg/kg every 8 hours (up to a maximum of 500mg per dose).
Duration of Treatment: Typically 7-10 days, depending on the infection type and clinical response.
Administration:
Must be administered as a slow intravenous infusion over 30-60 minutes.
Can be switched to oral metronidazole once the patient's condition improves.
Compatibility: Can be diluted with compatible intravenous fluids (e.g., 0.9% Sodium Chloride or 5% Dextrose).
Broad-Spectrum Activity: Effective against a wide range of anaerobic bacteria and protozoa.
Rapid Onset: Provides quick therapeutic effects due to direct intravenous administration.
Well-Tolerated: Generally safe with a low risk of resistance development.
Storage: Store at controlled room temperature (15-30°C). Protect from light and freezing.
Shelf Life: Typically 24-36 months, depending on the manufacturer.
Contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to metronidazole or other nitroimidazole derivatives.
Use with caution in patients with:
Severe hepatic impairment (dose adjustment may be required).
History of blood dyscrasias or neurological disorders.
Avoid alcohol consumption during treatment and for at least 48 hours after completion to prevent disulfiram-like reactions.
Common side effects include:
Nausea, vomiting, or metallic taste in the mouth.
Headache or dizziness.
Rare but serious side effects may include:
Peripheral neuropathy (with prolonged use).
Seizures or encephalopathy.
Allergic reactions (e.g., rash, Stevens-Johnson syndrome).
