Erythromycin Lactobionate for Injection 1g
Composition:
Each vial contains:
- Erythromycin Lactobionate - 1g (equivalent to 1g Erythromycin base)
Description:
Erythromycin is a macrolide antibiotic with broad-spectrum activity against gram-positive and some gram-negative bacteria. It inhibits bacterial protein synthesis, making it effective in treating a variety of infections.
Indications:
Erythromycin Lactobionate for Injection is used for the treatment of infections caused by erythromycin-sensitive organisms, including:
- Respiratory tract infections (pneumonia, pertussis, bronchitis, Legionnaires' disease)
- Skin and soft tissue infections (impetigo, erysipelas, abscesses)
- Diphtheria (as adjunct to antitoxin)
- Syphilis (in penicillin-allergic patients)
- Pelvic inflammatory disease (PID)
- Severe streptococcal infections
Dosage & Administration:
Intravenous (IV) Use Only
- Adults & children >12 years: 15-20mg/kg/day, divided into 6-hourly doses
- Severe infections: Up to 4g per day
- Children (<12 years): 20-50mg/kg/day in divided doses
Reconstitution & Administration:
- Reconstitute the 1g vial with 20mL sterile water for injection.
- Further dilute in 250-500mL of normal saline (0.9% NaCl) or 5% dextrose.
- Administer via slow IV infusion over 60 minutes.
DO NOT administer as an IV bolus or IM injection.
Contraindications:
- Hypersensitivity to erythromycin or other macrolides
- Severe liver disease
- Concurrent use with drugs that prolong the QT interval (e.g., cisapride, terfenadine, pimozide, astemizole)
Precautions:
- Use with caution in patients with liver impairment
- Monitor for signs of Clostridium difficile-associated diarrhea (CDAD)
- May cause QT prolongation and arrhythmias
Adverse Reactions:
- Common: Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain
- Serious: Hepatotoxicity, QT prolongation, allergic reactions (anaphylaxis, rash, angioedema)
Drug Interactions:
- Warfarin: Increased bleeding risk
- Statins (simvastatin, lovastatin): Increased risk of myopathy/rhabdomyolysis
- Theophylline, digoxin, cyclosporine: Increased serum levels
Overdose & Management:
- Symptoms: Severe nausea, vomiting, cardiac arrhythmias
- Treatment: Supportive care, ECG monitoring, IV fluids
Storage Conditions:
- Store below 25°C, protect from light and moisture
- Use reconstituted solution immediately or within 8 hours (at room temperature)
