Composition:

• Cefuroxime Axetil equivalent to Cefuroxime 500mg

Description:

Cefuroxime Axetil is a second-generation cephalosporin antibiotic with broad-spectrum activity against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. It is commonly used for the treatment of various bacterial infections, particularly those of the respiratory tract, urinary tract, skin, and soft tissues.

Indications:

Cefuroxime Axetil Tablets 500mg are indicated for the treatment of infections caused by susceptible bacteria, including:

• Respiratory tract infections (pharyngitis, tonsillitis, bronchitis, pneumonia)
• Urinary tract infections (UTIs) (cystitis, pyelonephritis)
• Skin and soft tissue infections (cellulitis, impetigo, abscesses)
• Sinusitis
• Otitis media (middle ear infections)
• Uncomplicated gonorrhea (Neisseria gonorrhoeae)
• Lyme disease (early-stage treatment)

Dosage & Administration:

• Adults & Adolescents (≥12 years or ≥40 kg):
  • 250mg to 500mg every 12 hours, depending on infection severity
• Children (≥3 months - 12 years):
  • 10-15 mg/kg every 12 hours, depending on infection severity
• Uncomplicated gonorrhea:
  • Single 1g dose
• Lyme disease:
  • 500mg twice daily for 20 days
• Renal Impairment:
  • Dose adjustment required if creatinine clearance <30 mL/min

Administration:

• Take with food to improve absorption.
• Swallow the tablet whole with water; do not crush or chew.

Contraindications:

• Hypersensitivity to Cefuroxime, cephalosporins, or penicillins.

Precautions:

• Use with caution in patients with renal impairment.
• Monitor for Clostridium difficile-associated diarrhea.
• May cause false-positive urine glucose test in diabetic patients.

Adverse Reactions:

• Gastrointestinal: Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain.
• Allergic Reactions: Rash, itching, anaphylaxis (rare).
• Hematologic: Leukopenia, thrombocytopenia (rare).
• Hepatic: Temporary increase in liver enzymes (ALT, AST).

Drug Interactions:

• Probenecid may increase cefuroxime levels.
• Antacids & H2-receptor blockers may reduce absorption.
• May interfere with oral contraceptives.
