Levofloxacin Hydrochloride and Sodium Chloride Injection

Product Overview

Levofloxacin Hydrochloride and Sodium Chloride Injection is a sterile, non-pyrogenic solution designed for intravenous administration. It contains Levofloxacin Hydrochloride, a broad-spectrum fluoroquinolone antibiotic, in 0.9% Sodium Chloride solution. This ready-to-use formulation is effective against a wide range of bacterial infections.

Key Features

  • Active Ingredient: Levofloxacin Hydrochloride

  • Concentration: Commonly available as 500mg/100ml or 750mg/150ml.

  • Formulation: Clear, slightly yellow to yellow solution.

  • Administration: Intravenous infusion.

  • Packaging: Single-dose bags or bottles, typically in 100ml or 150ml sizes.

Indications

  • Bacterial Infections: Treatment of adults with infections caused by susceptible strains of bacteria, including:

    • Community-acquired pneumonia (CAP).

    • Hospital-acquired pneumonia (HAP).

    • Acute bacterial sinusitis (ABS).

    • Complicated skin and skin structure infections (cSSSI).

    • Complicated urinary tract infections (cUTI).

    • Acute pyelonephritis.

  • Broad-Spectrum Activity: Effective against Gram-positive, Gram-negative, and atypical pathogens.

Mechanism of Action

  • Levofloxacin is a third-generation fluoroquinolone antibiotic that inhibits bacterial DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV, essential enzymes for DNA replication, transcription, and repair.

  • This action leads to bacterial cell death and prevents further growth of susceptible organisms.

Dosage and Administration

  • Recommended Dosage:

    • Adults:

      • 500mg (100ml) once daily for mild to moderate infections.

      • 750mg (150ml) once daily for severe or complicated infections.

    • Duration of Treatment: Typically 7-14 days, depending on the type and severity of the infection.

  • Administration:

    • Must be administered as a slow intravenous infusion over 60-90 minutes.

    • Can be switched to oral levofloxacin (same dosage) once the patient's condition improves.

  • Compatibility: Can be infused with other compatible intravenous fluids if needed.

Advantages

  • Broad-Spectrum Coverage: Effective against a wide range of bacterial pathogens.

  • Once-Daily Dosing: Convenient dosing regimen improves patient compliance.

  • Ready-to-Use Formulation: Eliminates the need for reconstitution, reducing preparation time and risk of errors.

Storage and Handling

  • Storage: Store at controlled room temperature (15-30°C). Protect from light and freezing.

  • Shelf Life: Typically 24-36 months, depending on the manufacturer.

Precautions

  • Contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to levofloxacin, other fluoroquinolones, or any component of the formulation.
