Cloxacillin for Injection 500mg
Composition:
Each vial contains:
- Cloxacillin Sodium - 500mg (equivalent to 500mg Cloxacillin)
Description:
Cloxacillin is a semisynthetic penicillin with a narrow-spectrum antibacterial activity. It is resistant to β-lactamase enzymes produced by Staphylococcus aureus, making it effective against penicillin-resistant staphylococcal infections.
Indications:
Used for the treatment of infections caused by penicillinase-producing staphylococci, including:
- Skin & soft tissue infections (boils, abscesses, cellulitis, impetigo)
- Respiratory tract infections (pneumonia, bronchitis, pharyngitis, tonsillitis)
- Bone & joint infections (osteomyelitis, septic arthritis)
- Endocarditis
- Septicemia
Dosage & Administration:
Intravenous (IV) or Intramuscular (IM) Use
- Adults & children >12 years: 500mg every 6 hours
- Severe infections: 1g every 4-6 hours
- Maximum dose: 8g per day
- Children (under 12 years): 50-100mg/kg/day in divided doses every 6 hours
Reconstitution & Administration:
- IV injection: Dissolve 500mg vial in 10mL sterile water, administer slowly over 3-5 minutes
- IM injection: Dissolve 500mg vial in 2mL sterile water, inject deep intramuscularly
Contraindications:
- Hypersensitivity to cloxacillin, penicillins, or cephalosporins
- History of severe allergic reactions (anaphylaxis, angioedema)
Precautions:
- Use with caution in patients with renal or hepatic impairment
- May cause Clostridium difficile-associated diarrhea (CDAD)
- Cross-allergenicity with other β-lactam antibiotics (e.g., cephalosporins)
Adverse Reactions:
- Common: Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, skin rash
- Serious: Anaphylaxis, severe skin reactions (Stevens-Johnson syndrome), liver dysfunction
Drug Interactions:
- Probenecid: Increases cloxacillin levels
- Oral contraceptives: May reduce contraceptive effectiveness
- Methotrexate: Increased toxicity risk
Overdose & Management:
- Symptoms: Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, seizures (in severe cases)
- Treatment: Supportive care, IV fluids, hemodialysis if necessary
Storage Conditions:
- Store below 25°C, protect from light and moisture
- Use reconstituted solution immediately
