Cefoxitin Sodium for Injection 1g

Composition:

Each vial contains:

• Cefoxitin Sodium equivalent to Cefoxitin 1g

Description:

Cefoxitin is a second-generation cephamycin antibiotic with a broad spectrum of activity against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. It is particularly effective against anaerobic bacteria, making it useful in the treatment of intra-abdominal and gynecological infections.

Indications:

Cefoxitin Sodium for Injection is used for the treatment of infections caused by susceptible bacteria, including:

• Respiratory tract infections (pneumonia, bronchitis)
• Urinary tract infections (UTIs)
• Intra-abdominal infections (peritonitis, intra-abdominal abscess)
• Gynecological infections (endometritis, pelvic inflammatory disease)
• Skin and soft tissue infections
• Bone and joint infections
• Septicemia (bacteremia)
• Surgical prophylaxis to prevent post-operative infections

Dosage & Administration:

• Adults:
  • 1-2g every 6-8 hours via intravenous (IV) or intramuscular (IM) injection.
  • Maximum dose: 12g per day in divided doses.
• Children (>3 months):
  • 80-160 mg/kg/day in 2-4 divided doses (maximum 12g/day).
• Neonates (<3 months):
  • 40-80 mg/kg/day in 2-4 divided doses.
• Surgical Prophylaxis:
  • 1-2g IV injection 30-60 minutes before surgery, followed by additional doses every 6-8 hours if required.
• Patients with Renal Impairment:
  • Dose adjustment is required for creatinine clearance ≤30 mL/min.

Administration:

• Intramuscular (IM): Reconstitute with sterile water for injection or lidocaine solution (if applicable, per physician's recommendation).
• Intravenous (IV): Reconstitute with sterile water for injection and administer as a slow IV injection (3-5 minutes) or IV infusion over 30-60 minutes.

Contraindications:

• Hypersensitivity to Cefoxitin, cephalosporins, or penicillins.

Precautions:

• Perform a skin sensitivity test before administration in allergic patients.
• Use with caution in renal impairment; dose adjustments may be required.
• Monitor for gastrointestinal side effects, such as diarrhea or pseudomembranous colitis.

Adverse Reactions:

• Gastrointestinal: Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain.
• Allergic Reactions: Rash, pruritus, anaphylaxis (rare).
• Hematologic: Leukopenia, thrombocytopenia, eosinophilia.
• Hepatic: Transient increase in liver enzymes (AST, ALT).

Drug Interactions:

• May enhance the nephrotoxicity of aminoglycosides and loop diuretics.
• May interfere with glucose urine tests, leading to false-positive results.
