Ampicillin Sodium and Sulbactam Sodium for Injection
Each vial contains:
Ampicillin Sodium: Equivalent to 1g (1000mg) of Ampicillin.
Sulbactam Sodium: Equivalent to 0.5g (500mg) of Sulbactam.
Ampicillin Sodium and Sulbactam Sodium for Injection is a combination antibiotic medication. Ampicillin is a penicillin-class antibiotic that fights bacteria, while sulbactam is a beta-lactamase inhibitor that prevents bacterial resistance. This combination enhances the effectiveness of the treatment against a broader range of bacteria, including beta-lactamase-producing strains. The injectable form is suitable for severe infections or when oral administration is not feasible.
This medication is used to treat infections caused by susceptible bacteria, including:
Respiratory tract infections (e.g., pneumonia, bronchitis)
Intra-abdominal infections (e.g., peritonitis)
Skin and soft tissue infections (e.g., cellulitis, abscesses)
Urinary tract infections (e.g., pyelonephritis)
Gynecological infections (e.g., endometritis, pelvic inflammatory disease)
Septicemia
Adults:
Mild to moderate infections: 1.5g (1g ampicillin + 0.5g sulbactam) every 6-8 hours, intravenously or intramuscularly.
Severe infections: 3g (2g ampicillin + 1g sulbactam) every 6 hours, intravenously.
Children:
Dosage: 150mg/kg body weight per day (based on ampicillin component), divided into 3-4 doses, intravenously or intramuscularly.
Administration: Reconstitute the vial with sterile water for injection or compatible IV fluids. Administer by slow intravenous injection or infusion over 15-30 minutes, or as an intramuscular injection.
Common side effects may include:
Gastrointestinal disturbances (e.g., nausea, vomiting, diarrhea)
Allergic reactions (e.g., rash, itching)
Injection site reactions (e.g., pain, redness)
Serious side effects (e.g., severe allergic reactions, Clostridioides difficile-associated diarrhea) are rare but require immediate medical attention.
Hypersensitivity to ampicillin, sulbactam, other penicillins, or any component of the formulation.
History of severe allergic reactions (e.g., anaphylaxis) to beta-lactam antibiotics.
Consult a doctor before use if you have a history of kidney disease, mononucleosis, or allergies.
Regular monitoring of kidney and liver function is recommended during prolonged use.
Discontinue use and consult a doctor if severe diarrhea or abdominal pain occurs.
Probenecid: May increase ampicillin blood levels.
Oral contraceptives: May reduce contraceptive efficacy.
Methotrexate: May increase the risk of methotrexate toxicity.
Before reconstitution: Store in a cool, dry place (below 25°C), away from direct sunlight.
After reconstitution: Use immediately or store in the refrigerator (2-8°C) for up to 24 hours. Do not freeze.
