Ampicillin Sodium and Cloxacillin Sodium for Injection 500mg
Composition:
Each vial contains:
- Ampicillin Sodium - 250mg
- Cloxacillin Sodium - 250mg
Description:
Ampicillin Sodium and Cloxacillin Sodium for Injection is a broad-spectrum penicillin antibiotic combination.
- Ampicillin is a beta-lactam antibiotic effective against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria.
- Cloxacillin is a penicillinase-resistant antibiotic, providing additional coverage against penicillinase-producing staphylococci.
Indications:
This combination is used to treat bacterial infections caused by susceptible organisms, including:
- Respiratory tract infections (pneumonia, bronchitis, tonsillitis)
- Skin and soft tissue infections
- Bone and joint infections (osteomyelitis)
- Urinary tract infections (UTIs)
- Septicemia and endocarditis
- Post-operative infections
Dosage & Administration:
Intramuscular (IM) or Intravenous (IV) Injection
- Adults: 500mg to 1g every 6-8 hours, depending on severity
- Children: 50-100mg/kg/day in divided doses
- Neonates: 25-50mg/kg/day in divided doses
Reconstitution & Administration:
- IV injection: Dissolve in 10mL sterile water for injection, administer slowly over 3-5 minutes
- IM injection: Dissolve in 2mL sterile water for injection, inject deep intramuscularly
Contraindications:
- Hypersensitivity to penicillins or beta-lactam antibiotics
- Severe renal impairment (without dosage adjustment)
- History of severe allergic reactions (e.g., anaphylaxis) to beta-lactams
Precautions:
- Monitor renal and hepatic function during prolonged use
- Use with caution in patients with a history of allergies or asthma
- Avoid in patients with infectious mononucleosis (risk of rash)
Adverse Reactions:
- Common: Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, rash
- Serious: Anaphylaxis, Stevens-Johnson Syndrome (rare), Clostridioides difficile-associated diarrhea
Drug Interactions:
- Probenecid: Increases blood levels of ampicillin and cloxacillin
- Oral contraceptives: May reduce efficacy
- Aminoglycosides: Potential inactivation if mixed in the same IV solution
Overdose & Management:
- Symptoms: Seizures, nephrotoxicity, severe diarrhea
- Treatment: Supportive care, hemodialysis if necessary
Storage Conditions:
- Store below 25°C
- Protect from moisture and light
- Use reconstituted solution immediately
