Indications:
It is used to treat intestinal and parenteral amebiasis (such as amebic liver abscess, pleural amebiasis, etc.). It can also be used to treat vaginal trichomoniasis, balsamiasis and cutaneous leishmaniasis, guinea worm infection, etc. At present, it is also widely used in the treatment of anaerobic bacteria infection.

Matters needing attention:
(1) Interference with diagnosis: metabolites of this product can make urine dark red.
(2) The dose of the original liver disease should be reduced. Discontinue the drug if dyskinesia or other central nervous system symptoms occur. A white blood cell count should be done before repeating a course of treatment. In patients with anaerobic bacteria infection combined with renal failure, the dosing interval should be extended from 8 hours to 12 hours.
(3) This product can inhibit alcohol metabolism, should abstain from alcohol during the drug, after drinking may appear abdominal pain, vomiting, headache and other symptoms.

Pharmacology and toxicology:
This product is a nitroimidazole derivative, which can inhibit the REDOX reaction of Amoeba and break the nitrogen chain of amoeba. In vitro tests have shown that when the concentration of the drug is 1 ~ 2mg/L, the morphology of amoeba histolytica can be changed in 6 ~ 20 hours, and all are killed within 24 hours, and the concentration of 0.2mg/L can kill amoeba histolytica within 72 hours. This product has a strong killing effect on trichomonas, its mechanism is not clear.
Metronidazole has a killing effect on anaerobic microorganisms, and the metabolites generated when it is reduced in the human body also have an anti-anaerobic effect, inhibiting the synthesis of deoxyribonucleic acid of bacteria, thereby interfering with the growth and reproduction of bacteria, and ultimately causing bacterial death.
It is carcinogenic to some animals.
