Ceftazidime for Injection 1g
Composition:
Each vial contains:
- Ceftazidime (as Ceftazidime Sodium) 1g
Description:
Ceftazidime is a third-generation cephalosporin antibiotic with a broad spectrum of activity against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, including Pseudomonas aeruginosa. It is used for the treatment of severe bacterial infections, particularly in hospitalized and immunocompromised patients.
Indications:
Ceftazidime for Injection is used to treat infections caused by susceptible bacteria, including:
- Respiratory tract infections (pneumonia, bronchitis, cystic fibrosis-related infections)
- Urinary tract infections
- Skin and soft tissue infections
- Bone and joint infections
- Intra-abdominal infections (peritonitis, biliary tract infections)
- Meningitis
- Sepsis and bacteremia
- Infections in neutropenic patients
Dosage & Administration:
- Adults:
- The usual dose is 1-2 g every 8-12 hours, depending on the severity of the infection.
- In severe infections, up to 6 g per day may be required.
- Children (>2 months):
- 30-50 mg/kg every 8-12 hours (maximum 6 g/day in severe infections).
- Neonates (<2 months):
- 25-50 mg/kg every 12 hours.
- Patients with Renal Impairment:
- Dose adjustments are required in patients with creatinine clearance <50 mL/min.
Administration:
- Intravenous (IV) Infusion: Dissolve in sterile water for injection or normal saline and administer over 15-30 minutes.
- Intramuscular (IM) Injection: Reconstitute with sterile water or lidocaine solution (if applicable, per physician's recommendation).
Contraindications:
- Hypersensitivity to Ceftazidime, cephalosporins, or penicillins.
Precautions:
- Perform a skin sensitivity test before administration in allergic patients.
- Monitor renal function, especially in elderly and renally impaired patients.
- Use with caution in patients with gastrointestinal diseases (e.g., colitis).
Adverse Reactions:
- Gastrointestinal: Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, pseudomembranous colitis.
- Allergic Reactions: Rash, pruritus, anaphylaxis (rare).
- Hematologic: Leukopenia, thrombocytopenia, eosinophilia.
- Hepatic: Temporary elevation of liver enzymes (AST, ALT).
- Neurological: Seizures (rare, mainly in renally impaired patients).
Drug Interactions:
- May increase nephrotoxicity when used with aminoglycosides or loop diuretics.
- Prolonged use with anticoagulants may increase bleeding risk.
Storage Conditions:
- Store below 25°C, protect from light and moisture.
- Keep out of reach of children.
