Cefepime Sodium for Injection 1g
Composition:
Each vial contains:
- Cefepime Sodium - 1g (equivalent to 1g Cefepime base)
Description:
Cefepime is a fourth-generation cephalosporin antibiotic with a broad-spectrum activity against gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria, including Pseudomonas aeruginosa. It inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis, making it effective for severe infections.
Indications:
Cefepime Sodium for Injection is used for the treatment of infections caused by susceptible organisms, including:
- Respiratory tract infections (pneumonia, bronchitis, nosocomial infections)
- Urinary tract infections (UTI, complicated & uncomplicated)
- Skin & soft tissue infections
- Intra-abdominal infections (in combination with metronidazole)
- Febrile neutropenia (empiric therapy in immunocompromised patients)
- Septicemia (bacteremia caused by susceptible organisms)
- Meningitis (caused by susceptible bacteria, including Streptococcus pneumoniae)
Dosage & Administration:
Intravenous (IV) or Intramuscular (IM) Use
Adults & Children > 12 years (≥ 40 kg):
- Mild to moderate infections: 1g every 12 hours
- Severe infections: 2g every 8-12 hours
- Febrile neutropenia or nosocomial pneumonia: 2g every 8 hours
Children (2 months to 12 years, < 40 kg):
- 50 mg/kg every 12 hours (mild to moderate infections)
- 50 mg/kg every 8 hours (severe infections)
Reconstitution & Administration:
- IV injection: Dissolve 1g vial in 10mL sterile water; administer over 3-5 minutes
- IV infusion: Further dilute in 50-100mL normal saline or 5% dextrose and infuse over 30 minutes
- IM injection: Dissolve 1g vial in 3mL sterile water or lidocaine 0.5% (for pain reduction)
Contraindications:
- Hypersensitivity to cefepime, cephalosporins, or β-lactam antibiotics
- History of severe allergic reactions (e.g., anaphylaxis, angioedema)
Precautions:
- Use with caution in patients with renal impairment (dose adjustment required)
- Monitor for Clostridium difficile-associated diarrhea (CDAD)
- Risk of neurotoxicity in renal failure patients (seizures, encephalopathy, confusion)
Adverse Reactions:
- Common: Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, rash, pain at injection site
- Serious: Anaphylaxis, Clostridium difficile colitis, seizures, nephrotoxicity
Drug Interactions:
- Aminoglycosides & diuretics (e.g., furosemide): Increased risk of nephrotoxicity
- Probenecid: May reduce cefepime clearance
- Warfarin: May increase bleeding risk
Overdose & Management:
- Symptoms: Neurotoxicity (seizures, confusion, coma), renal dysfunction
- Treatment: Supportive care, hemodialysis if needed
Storage Conditions:
- Store below 25°C, protect from light and moisture
- Use reconstituted solution within 24 hours (if refrigerated) or 12 hours (at room temperature)
