Cefalotin Sodium for Injection 1g
Composition:
Each vial contains:
- Cefalotin Sodium equivalent to 1g of Cefalotin
Description:
Cefalotin Sodium is a first-generation cephalosporin antibiotic with bactericidal activity. It works by inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis, making it effective against Gram-positive and some Gram-negative bacteria.
Indications:
Cefalotin Sodium for Injection is indicated for the treatment of infections caused by susceptible organisms, including:
- Respiratory tract infections (pneumonia, bronchitis)
- Skin and soft tissue infections
- Urinary tract infections
- Bone and joint infections
- Septicemia and endocarditis
- Prophylaxis in surgical procedures
Dosage & Administration:
Intravenous (IV) or Intramuscular (IM) Use
Adults:
- Mild to moderate infections: 500mg to 1g IV/IM every 6-8 hours
- Severe infections: 2g IV every 4-6 hours
- Surgical prophylaxis: 1-2g IV 30 minutes before surgery, followed by 1-2g every 6-8 hours for 24 hours
Pediatrics:
- Usual dose: 50-100mg/kg/day IV/IM in divided doses every 6-8 hours
- Severe infections: Up to 150mg/kg/day
Preparation & Administration:
- For IM injection: Dissolve 1g vial in 4mL sterile water for injection
- For IV injection: Dissolve 1g vial in 10mL sterile water for injection, inject slowly over 3-5 minutes
- For IV infusion: Dilute 1g in 50-100mL of 0.9% NaCl or 5% dextrose, infuse over 30-60 minutes
- Do not mix with aminoglycosides in the same syringe or IV line
Contraindications:
- Hypersensitivity to cephalosporins or beta-lactam antibiotics
Precautions:
- Use with caution in renal impairment (adjust dose accordingly)
- Monitor for hypersensitivity reactions (cross-reactivity with penicillin possible)
- Prolonged use may lead to superinfection (e.g., Clostridium difficile colitis)
Adverse Reactions:
- Common: Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, rash, pain at injection site
- Serious: Hypersensitivity reactions, anaphylaxis, nephrotoxicity, pseudomembranous colitis
Drug Interactions:
- Increased nephrotoxicity risk with aminoglycosides or loop diuretics
- May enhance anticoagulant effects of warfarin (monitor INR closely)
Overdose & Management:
- Symptoms: Seizures, nephrotoxicity
- Treatment: Supportive care, hemodialysis may be beneficial
Storage Conditions:
- Store below 25°C, protect from light
- Use reconstituted solution within 6 hours (room temperature) or 24 hours (refrigerated at 2-8°C)
