Description:
Potassium Iodide (KI) is an iodine supplement that helps maintain normal thyroid function and is commonly used for thyroid protection in radiation exposure and iodine deficiency disorders.
Indications:
Potassium Iodide Tablets are indicated for:
- Thyroid protection during radiation exposure (e.g., nuclear emergencies)
- Iodine supplementation in iodine deficiency
- Treatment of hyperthyroidism (adjunct therapy)
- Prevention of thyroid uptake of radioactive iodine
Dosage & Administration:
For Radiation Exposure Prevention:
- Adults & children over 12 years: 130mg (13 tablets) once daily
- Children 3-12 years: 65mg (6.5 tablets) once daily
- Children 1 month-3 years: 32.5mg (3.25 tablets) once daily
- Infants under 1 month: 16.25mg (1.625 tablets) once daily
- Duration: Take until the risk of exposure subsides (typically 1-3 days)
For Iodine Deficiency:
- Adults: 100-200µg per day (1-2 tablets daily)
- Pregnant & lactating women: 150-250µg per day (1.5-2.5 tablets daily)
- Children: 50-150µg per day (0.5-1.5 tablets daily)
Take with water, preferably after meals.
Contraindications:
- Hypersensitivity to iodine or potassium iodide
- Hyperthyroidism (except as adjunct therapy)
- Autoimmune thyroid diseases (e.g., Hashimoto's thyroiditis)
- Dermatitis herpetiformis or hypocomplementemic vasculitis
Precautions:
- Use with caution in patients with kidney disease or heart disorders
- Avoid prolonged use without medical supervision
- Not recommended for regular supplementation unless prescribed
Adverse Reactions:
- Common: Nausea, stomach upset, metallic taste
- Serious: Allergic reactions, hyperthyroidism or hypothyroidism, skin rashes, swelling of salivary glands
Drug Interactions:
- May interfere with thyroid medications (e.g., levothyroxine, antithyroid drugs)
- Increased risk of hyperkalemia with potassium-sparing diuretics (e.g., spironolactone, ACE inhibitors)
- May reduce absorption of certain medications (e.g., lithium, warfarin)
Overdose & Management:
- Symptoms: Burning sensation in the mouth or throat, abdominal pain, diarrhea, vomiting, severe skin rash
- Treatment: Discontinue use, administer symptomatic treatment (e.g., milk or starch solutions), and seek medical attention
Storage Conditions:
- Store at 20-25°C, protect from moisture and light
- Keep out of reach of children
