Isoniazid Tablets 300mg
Each tablet contains Isoniazid 300mg.
Isoniazid Tablets 300mg are a first-line antitubercular medication used for the treatment and prevention of tuberculosis (TB). Isoniazid works by inhibiting the synthesis of mycolic acids, essential components of the bacterial cell wall, making it highly effective against Mycobacterium tuberculosis.
Isoniazid is indicated for:
Treatment of active tuberculosis (TB): As part of a combination therapy regimen.
Preventive therapy for latent TB infection: To prevent the progression to active TB.
Adults:
Active TB: 5mg/kg body weight (usually 300mg) once daily, as part of a combination therapy.
Latent TB: 300mg once daily for 6-9 months.
Children:
Active TB: 10-15mg/kg body weight once daily, not exceeding 300mg per day.
Latent TB: 10-20mg/kg body weight once daily, not exceeding 300mg per day.
Administration: Swallow the tablet whole with water. Can be taken with or without food, but consistent administration with food may reduce gastrointestinal side effects.
Common side effects may include:
Gastrointestinal disturbances (e.g., nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain)
Peripheral neuropathy (numbness or tingling in hands and feet)
Elevated liver enzymes
Serious side effects (e.g., hepatotoxicity, severe allergic reactions, lupus-like syndrome) are rare but require immediate medical attention.
Hypersensitivity to isoniazid or any component of the formulation.
Acute liver disease or severe hepatic damage.
History of isoniazid-associated hepatitis.
Consult a doctor before use if you have a history of liver disease, alcohol dependence, or diabetes.
Regular monitoring of liver function tests is recommended during treatment.
Pyridoxine (Vitamin B6) supplementation is recommended to prevent peripheral neuropathy, especially in high-risk patients (e.g., malnourished, pregnant, or breastfeeding women).
Anticonvulsants (e.g., phenytoin, carbamazepine): Isoniazid may increase their plasma concentrations.
Rifampicin: Concurrent use may increase the risk of hepatotoxicity.
Alcohol: May increase the risk of liver damage.
Store in a cool, dry place (below 25°C), away from direct sunlight. Keep out of reach of children.
