Description:
Ketoprofen is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) with analgesic, anti-inflammatory, and antipyretic properties. It works by inhibiting prostaglandin synthesis, providing relief from pain, inflammation, and fever.
Indications:
Used for the short-term management of moderate to severe pain and inflammatory conditions, including:
- Postoperative pain
- Musculoskeletal disorders (arthritis, rheumatic diseases, sprains, strains)
- Dysmenorrhea
- Dental pain
- Fever reduction
Dosage & Administration:
Intravenous (IV) or Intramuscular (IM) Use
- Adults & Adolescents (≥18 years): 100mg every 8-12 hours
- Maximum dose: 300mg per day
- Elderly patients: Use with caution, start with a lower dose
Reconstitution & Administration:
- IV injection: Dilute 100mg vial in 10mL sterile water; administer slowly over 10-15 minutes
- IM injection: Inject deep into the muscle
Contraindications:
- Hypersensitivity to ketoprofen, aspirin, or other NSAIDs
- Active gastrointestinal ulcers or bleeding
- Severe renal or hepatic impairment
- Uncontrolled heart failure
- Pregnancy (third trimester) & breastfeeding
Precautions:
- Monitor for gastrointestinal bleeding (black stools, vomiting blood)
- Use with caution in patients with kidney or liver disease
- May increase the risk of cardiovascular events (heart attack, stroke) with long-term use
Adverse Reactions:
- Common: Nausea, vomiting, heartburn, dizziness, headache
- Serious: Gastrointestinal bleeding, kidney toxicity, severe allergic reactions (anaphylaxis, rash, angioedema)
Drug Interactions:
- Anticoagulants (Warfarin, Heparin): Increased bleeding risk
- Other NSAIDs & corticosteroids: Higher risk of stomach ulcers
- Diuretics & antihypertensive drugs: Reduced effectiveness
Overdose & Management:
- Symptoms: Confusion, dizziness, stomach pain, severe vomiting, kidney failure
- Treatment: Supportive care, activated charcoal if early ingestion, IV fluids
Storage Conditions:
- Store below 25°C, protect from light and moisture
- Use reconstituted solution immediately
