Composition:
Each vial contains:
- Ampicillin Sodium .........… 250mg
Description:
Ampicillin Sodium is a broad-spectrum β-lactam antibiotic belonging to the penicillin class. It is effective against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria by inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis.
Indications:
Ampicillin Sodium for Injection is used to treat infections caused by susceptible bacteria, including:
- Respiratory tract infections (e.g., pneumonia, bronchitis)
- Urinary tract infections (UTIs)
- Gastrointestinal infections (e.g., enteritis, peritonitis)
- Bacterial meningitis
- Septicemia
- Skin and soft tissue infections
- Bone and joint infections
Dosage & Administration:
Adults & Children (>40 kg):
- Mild to moderate infections: 500mg - 1g every 6-8 hours
- Severe infections: 1-2g every 4-6 hours
Children (<40 kg):
- Neonates (<7 days old): 50mg/kg every 12 hours
- Infants & older children: 50mg/kg every 6-8 hours
Administration:
- Intramuscular (IM) injection: Reconstitute with sterile water for injection
- Intravenous (IV) injection: Administer slowly over 3-5 minutes
- IV infusion: Dilute and infuse over 15-30 minutes
Contraindications:
- Hypersensitivity to Ampicillin or other β-lactam antibiotics
- History of severe penicillin allergy (e.g., anaphylaxis)
- Mononucleosis (may increase risk of skin rash)
Warnings & Precautions:
- Allergic reactions: Risk of anaphylaxis in penicillin-sensitive individuals
- Renal impairment: Dose adjustment required
- Clostridium difficile-associated diarrhea: Monitor for signs of colitis
- Prolonged use may lead to superinfection
Adverse Reactions:
- Common: Nausea, diarrhea, skin rash
- Serious: Anaphylaxis, Stevens-Johnson Syndrome, blood dyscrasias, hepatotoxicity
Drug Interactions:
- Probenecid: Increases Ampicillin levels
- Oral contraceptives: May reduce contraceptive effectiveness
- Allopurinol: Increases risk of skin rash
Storage Conditions:
- Store below 25°C
- Protect from light
- Use immediately after reconstitution
