Ciprofloxacin Hydrochloride Tablets 500mg belong to the fluoroquinolone class of antibiotics. They are broad-spectrum antibiotics effective against a wide range of gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria. This medication is commonly used to treat various bacterial infections.
Ciprofloxacin is indicated for the treatment of infections caused by susceptible bacteria, including:
Respiratory tract infections (e.g., bronchitis, pneumonia)
Urinary tract infections (e.g., cystitis, pyelonephritis)
Skin and soft tissue infections (e.g., cellulitis, abscesses)
Bone and joint infections
Gastrointestinal infections (e.g., infectious diarrhea)
Sexually transmitted infections (e.g., gonorrhea)
Prophylaxis and treatment of anthrax
Adults:
Uncomplicated urinary tract infections: 250mg every 12 hours for 3 days.
Complicated urinary tract infections: 500mg every 12 hours for 7-14 days.
Respiratory, skin, and bone infections: 500mg every 12 hours for 7-14 days.
Elderly or patients with renal impairment: Dosage adjustment may be necessary. Consult a physician.
Administration: Swallow the tablet whole with water. Can be taken with or without food, but avoid dairy products or calcium-fortified juices within 2 hours of taking the medication.
Common side effects may include:
Gastrointestinal disturbances (e.g., nausea, vomiting, diarrhea)
Dizziness or headache
Rash or itching
Serious side effects (e.g., tendon rupture, nerve damage, severe allergic reactions) are rare but require immediate medical attention.
Hypersensitivity to ciprofloxacin, other quinolones, or any component of the formulation.
Use in children, adolescents, or pregnant/lactating women unless specifically indicated.
Consult a doctor before use if you have a history of kidney disease, liver disease, or seizures.
Avoid prolonged exposure to sunlight or UV light, as ciprofloxacin may increase photosensitivity.
Discontinue use and consult a doctor if you experience tendon pain, swelling, or inflammation.
Antacids, iron, or calcium supplements: May reduce absorption of ciprofloxacin. Take at least 2 hours apart.
Theophylline or caffeine: May increase their blood levels.
Warfarin: May increase the risk of bleeding. Monitor INR closely.
Store in a cool, dry place (below 25°C), away from direct sunlight. Keep out of reach of children.
