Ethambutol Hydrochloride Tablets 0.25g
Each tablet contains Ethambutol Hydrochloride equivalent to 0.25g (250mg) of Ethambutol.
Ethambutol Hydrochloride Tablets 0.25g are an antitubercular medication used primarily for the treatment of tuberculosis (TB). Ethambutol works by inhibiting the synthesis of bacterial cell walls, making it effective against Mycobacterium tuberculosis. It is typically used as part of a combination therapy regimen to prevent the development of drug resistance.
Ethambutol is indicated for:
Treatment of active tuberculosis (TB): As part of a combination therapy regimen.
Retreatment of TB: In cases where resistance to other first-line drugs is suspected.
Adults and children ≥13 years:
Initial phase: 15-25mg/kg body weight once daily, usually as part of a 4-drug regimen (e.g., with isoniazid, rifampicin, and pyrazinamide).
Continuation phase: 15mg/kg body weight once daily.
Children <13 years: Not recommended due to the risk of optic neuritis.
Administration: Swallow the tablet whole with water. Can be taken with or without food.
Common side effects may include:
Gastrointestinal disturbances (e.g., nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain)
Visual disturbances (e.g., blurred vision, color blindness)
Joint pain or gout
Serious side effects (e.g., optic neuritis, peripheral neuropathy, severe allergic reactions) are rare but require immediate medical attention.
Hypersensitivity to ethambutol or any component of the formulation.
Optic neuritis or other severe visual impairments.
Children under 13 years of age (due to the inability to monitor visual acuity).
Consult a doctor before use if you have a history of kidney disease, gout, or diabetes.
Regular monitoring of visual acuity and color discrimination is recommended during treatment.
Use with caution in patients with renal impairment; dosage adjustment may be necessary.
Aluminum hydroxide: May reduce the absorption of ethambutol. Administer at least 4 hours apart.
Other antitubercular drugs (e.g., isoniazid, rifampicin): No significant interactions, but combination therapy increases the risk of hepatotoxicity.
Store in a cool, dry place (below 25°C), away from direct sunlight. Keep out of reach of children.
