Cefazolin Sodium for Injection 500mg
Composition:
Each vial contains:
- Cefazolin Sodium equivalent to Cefazolin 500mg
Description:
Cefazolin is a first-generation cephalosporin antibiotic with broad-spectrum activity against Gram-positive and some Gram-negative bacteria. It is widely used for the treatment of various bacterial infections and for perioperative prophylaxis to prevent postoperative infections.
Indications:
Cefazolin Sodium for Injection is indicated for the treatment of infections caused by susceptible bacteria, including:
- Respiratory tract infections (pneumonia, bronchitis)
- Urinary tract infections (UTIs)
- Skin and soft tissue infections (cellulitis, abscesses)
- Bone and joint infections (osteomyelitis, septic arthritis)
- Septicemia (bacteremia)
- Endocarditis
- Gynecological infections (postpartum infections)
- Perioperative prophylaxis (to prevent surgical infections)
Dosage & Administration:
- Adults:
- 500mg-1g every 6-12 hours via intravenous (IV) or intramuscular (IM) injection
- Maximum dose: 6g per day
- Children:
- 25-50 mg/kg/day in divided doses every 8 hours
- In severe infections, the dose may be increased to 100 mg/kg/day
- Surgical Prophylaxis:
- 1g IV injection 30-60 minutes before surgery, with additional doses if needed postoperatively.
- Patients with Renal Impairment:
- Dosage adjustment is required for creatinine clearance ≤30 mL/min.
Administration:
- Intramuscular (IM): Reconstitute with sterile water for injection or lidocaine solution (if recommended).
- Intravenous (IV): Reconstitute with sterile water for injection and administer as a slow IV injection (3-5 minutes) or IV infusion over 30-60 minutes.
Contraindications:
- Hypersensitivity to Cefazolin, cephalosporins, or penicillins.
Precautions:
- Perform a skin sensitivity test before administration in allergic patients.
- Use with caution in renal impairment; dose adjustments may be required.
- Monitor for gastrointestinal side effects, such as diarrhea or pseudomembranous colitis.
Adverse Reactions:
- Gastrointestinal: Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain.
- Allergic Reactions: Rash, pruritus, anaphylaxis (rare).
- Hematologic: Leukopenia, thrombocytopenia, eosinophilia.
- Hepatic: Transient increase in liver enzymes (AST, ALT).
Drug Interactions:
- May enhance the nephrotoxicity of aminoglycosides and loop diuretics.
- May interfere with glucose urine tests, leading to false-positive results.
