20% Mannitol Injection is a sterile, non-pyrogenic solution designed for intravenous administration. It contains 20% w/v of Mannitol, a hyperosmotic diuretic, in a 100ml formulation. Mannitol is widely used to reduce intracranial pressure (ICP), intraocular pressure (IOP), and promote diuresis in various clinical conditions.
Active Ingredient: Mannitol
Concentration: 20% w/v (20g of Mannitol per 100ml of water)
Formulation: Clear, colorless solution
Administration: Intravenous infusion
Packaging: Single-dose bag or bottle, 100ml per unit
Reduction of Intracranial Pressure (ICP): Used to treat cerebral edema and elevated ICP caused by traumatic brain injury, stroke, or brain tumors.
Reduction of Intraocular Pressure (IOP): Effective in managing acute glaucoma or preoperative preparation for ophthalmic surgery.
Diuresis: Promotes urine production in cases of acute renal failure or toxin/drug overdose.
Renal Protection: Used during certain surgical procedures (e.g., cardiopulmonary bypass) to prevent renal damage.
Osmotic Effect: Mannitol increases the osmolarity of blood plasma, drawing fluid from tissues into the bloodstream, thereby reducing edema and pressure in the brain or eyes.
Diuretic Effect: Mannitol is filtered by the kidneys but not reabsorbed, increasing urine output and promoting the excretion of toxins, drugs, and excess fluid.
Recommended Dosage:
Adults:
Cerebral Edema/ICP Reduction: 0.25-2g/kg (25-200ml of 20% solution) infused over 30-60 minutes.
Acute Glaucoma/IOP Reduction: 1.5-2g/kg (75-100ml of 20% solution) infused over 30-60 minutes.
Diuresis/Renal Protection: 50-100g (250-500ml of 20% solution) infused as needed.
Children: Dosage adjusted based on body weight (typically 0.25-1g/kg).
Administration:
Must be administered as a slow intravenous infusion using a filter to prevent crystallization.
Monitor vital signs, fluid balance, and electrolyte levels during infusion.
Compatibility: Compatible with most intravenous fluids, but avoid mixing with other medications.
Rapid Action: Provides quick reduction of intracranial and intraocular pressure.
Versatile Use: Effective for cerebral edema, acute glaucoma, and diuresis.
Well-Tolerated: Generally safe when administered correctly.
Storage: Store at controlled room temperature (15-30°C). Protect from freezing and excessive heat.
Shelf Life: Typically 24-36 months, depending on the manufacturer.
Contraindicated in patients with:
Severe renal impairment (anuria).
Pulmonary edema or congestive heart failure.
Known hypersensitivity to mannitol.
Use with caution in patients with:
Mild to moderate renal impairment.
Electrolyte imbalances (e.g., hyponatremia, hyperkalemia).
Monitor for signs of fluid overload, electrolyte disturbances, or renal dysfunction during treatment.
Common side effects include:
Fluid and electrolyte imbalances (e.g., dehydration, hyponatremia).
Headache, nausea, or vomiting.
Rare but serious side effects may include:
Acute renal failure (with excessive use).
Pulmonary edema or heart failure (with fluid overload).
Allergic reactions (e.g., rash, anaphylaxis).
