Active Ingredient

Each vial contains Ampicillin Sodium equivalent to 1g (1000mg) of Ampicillin.

 

Description

Ampicillin Sodium for Injection 1g is a broad-spectrum penicillin-class antibiotic. It is effective against a wide range of gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria by inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis. The injectable form is suitable for severe infections or when oral administration is not feasible.

 

Indications

Ampicillin is indicated for the treatment of infections caused by susceptible bacteria, including:

• Respiratory tract infections (e.g., pneumonia, bronchitis)

• Urinary tract infections (e.g., cystitis, pyelonephritis)

• Gastrointestinal infections (e.g., salmonellosis, shigellosis)

• Meningitis

• Septicemia

• Bacterial endocarditis (in combination with other antibiotics)

 

Dosage and Administration

• Adults:

  • Mild to moderate infections: 250-500mg every 6 hours, intravenously or intramuscularly.

  • Severe infections: 1-2g every 4-6 hours, intravenously.

• Children:

  • Dosage: 100-200mg/kg body weight per day, divided into 4-6 doses, intravenously or intramuscularly.

• Administration: Reconstitute the vial with sterile water for injection or compatible IV fluids. Administer by slow intravenous injection or infusion over 15-30 minutes, or as an intramuscular injection.

 

Side Effects

Common side effects may include:

• Gastrointestinal disturbances (e.g., nausea, vomiting, diarrhea)

• Allergic reactions (e.g., rash, itching)

• Injection site reactions (e.g., pain, redness)

Serious side effects (e.g., severe allergic reactions, Clostridioides difficile-associated diarrhea) are rare but require immediate medical attention.

 

Contraindications

• Hypersensitivity to ampicillin, other penicillins, or any component of the formulation.

• History of severe allergic reactions (e.g., anaphylaxis) to beta-lactam antibiotics.

 

Precautions

• Consult a doctor before use if you have a history of kidney disease, mononucleosis, or allergies.

• Regular monitoring of kidney and liver function is recommended during prolonged use.

• Discontinue use and consult a doctor if severe diarrhea or abdominal pain occurs.

 

Drug Interactions

• Probenecid: May increase ampicillin blood levels.

• Oral contraceptives: May reduce contraceptive efficacy.

• Methotrexate: May increase the risk of methotrexate toxicity.

 

Storage

• Before reconstitution: Store in a cool, dry place (below 25°C), away from direct sunlight.

• After reconstitution: Use immediately or store in the refrigerator (2-8°C) for up to 24 hours. Do not freeze.
