Erythromycin Eye Ointment 0.5%
  • Erythromycin eye ointment 0.5% (in a 10g tube) is a topical antibiotic commonly prescribed for bacterial eye infections, including conjunctivitis, styes, or blepharitis. The active ingredient, erythromycin, is a macrolide antibiotic that inhibits bacterial protein synthesis, preventing the bacteria from growing and spreading.

Indications:

  • Bacterial Conjunctivitis: Treats infections of the conjunctiva, the membrane covering the white part of the eye and the inner eyelid.
  • Blepharitis: Treats inflammation of the eyelids, particularly when caused by bacterial infections.
  • Ocular Infections due to Erythromycin-Sensitive Bacteria: For infections caused by bacteria susceptible to erythromycin, including certain strains of Staphylococcus and Streptococcus.
  • Prophylaxis in Newborns: Used to prevent bacterial eye infections (like Neisseria gonorrhoeae or Chlamydia trachomatis) in newborns, often applied immediately after birth

Dosage and Administration
  • For Bacterial Conjunctivitis and Blepharitis:

    • Dosage: Apply approximately a 1 cm (0.4 inch) strip of ointment inside the lower eyelid.
    • Frequency: Usually applied up to 4 times daily (every 6 hours), or as directed by a healthcare provider.
    • Duration: Continue use for 7 to 10 days, depending on the severity and response to treatment.
  • For Prophylaxis in Newborns (Ophthalmia Neonatorum):

    • Dosage: Apply a 1 cm strip of ointment in each eye immediately after birth, typically as a single dose.
    • Administration: Gently apply to the lower eyelid without washing off, to ensure adequate absorption.
  • Instructions for Application:

  • Wash Hands: Before and after applying the ointment to prevent contamination.
  • Important Notes:

  • Contact Lenses: Remove contact lenses before application and avoid wearing them during treatment.
  • Vision Blurring: Temporary blurring may occur, so avoid activities requiring clear vision, like driving, immediately after application.
  • Complete the Full Course: Finish the full course prescribed, even if symptoms improve, to prevent the infection from returning
  •
  • Avoid Touching the Tube Tip: Avoid contact between the tube and the eye or other surfaces to maintain sterility.
  • Technique: Tilt your head back, pull down the lower eyelid to form a pocket, and squeeze a small ribbon of ointment into the pocket.
  • Close the Eye Gently: After application, close your eye gently for 1-2 minutes. Blink slowly to spread the ointment.

Precautions

  • Contact Lenses: Avoid wearing contact lenses during treatment, as they may exacerbate the infection or interact with the medication.
  • Side Effects: Some people may experience temporary stinging, blurred vision, or minor eye irritation after application. Serious reactions are rare but should be reported if they occur.
