Character:
Gentamicin sulfate ointment 0.1% is a broad-spectrum antibiotic preparation for local administration. Gentamicin sulfate ointment USP of 0.1% per gram contains gentamicin sulfate USP equivalent to 1 mg gentamicin base in light metal mineral oil and white petroleum jelly, as well as 0.5 mg methyl parabens and 0.1 mg propyl parabens as preservatives.

Indications:
Primary skin infections: infectious impetigo, superficial folliculitis, rashes, dermatomycosis, fusarium, and pyoderma gangrena. Secondary skin infections: infectious rheumatoid dermatitis, pustular acne, pustular psoriasis, infected seborrheic dermatitis, infected contact dermatitis (including ivy), infected dermatitis, and fungal or viral bacterial superinfections. Note: Gentamicin sulfate is a fungicide that is not effective against viruses or fungi in skin infections. It can be used to treat infected skin cysts and certain other skin abscesses before incision and drainage are performed to allow full contact of antibiotics and infected bacteria. Good results have been obtained in the treatment of infected ecchymosis and other skin ulcers, infected superficial burns, paronychia, infected insect bites and st wounds, infected lacerations, abrasions and minor surgical wounds. Patients who are sensitive to neomycin can be treated with gentamicin sulfate, although regular observation of patients who are sensitive to topical antibiotics is recommended when treated with any topical antibiotics. Gentamicin sulfate ointment USP, 0.1% helps retain moisture and has been used for dry eczema or psoriasis skin infections. Gentamicin sulfate ointment USP, 0.1% has been successfully used on infants over 1 year of age as well as adults and children.

Adverse reaction:
In patients with skin diseases who have been treated with gentamicin sulfate, a small number of cases have reported irritating symptoms (erythema and pruritus) that do not normally require interruption of treatment. There was no evidence of any irritation or sensitization, but, in these patients, a patch test of gentamicin was subsequently performed on normal skin. Possible photosensitization has been reported in several patients, but in these patients it could not be caused by readministration of gentamicin and subsequent exposure to ultraviolet radiation.
